The USA's glittering portfolio of hotels is always evolving, and many impressive new properties have either recently been added to the roster or are poised to open next year. From sprawling luxury hotels with rooftop pools and destination bars to boutique boltholes offering home comfort, we've chosen our favourite new hotel in every state.

Alabama: The Laurel Hotel and Spa, Auburn
Opened in August 2022,
The Laurel is the first hotel of its kind in the state of Alabama. Tipped as a 'luxury teaching hotel', it's located at The Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center at Auburn University, where students are fully immersed in the art of hotel management and hospitality. Guests can expect a lesson in luxury, with contemporary rooms (think light wood, clean lines and marble) and fine dining options. Menus at restaurant 1856 are curated by chef-in-residence Tyler Lyne, known for his skills in molecular gastronomy.

Alaska: Aloft, Anchorage
Falling under the Marriott umbrella, boutique-style Aloft hotels are always a failsafe option. And one of their latest options is boosting the hotel scene in Anchorage, Alaska's most populous and cosmopolitan city. You'll find all the usual trappings including a 24-hour fitness centre and the down-to-earth WXYZ Lounge, offering cocktails and music. The modern spot grants easy access to the city's buzzing downtown, with its history museum and market, and is pet-friendly too.
Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley
Arizona: Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley, Scottsdale
One of the most hotly-anticipated openings of 2023, the Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley promises a luxurious escape in the Sonoran Desert. It'll sprawl over 20 acres with a well-appointed spa offering desert-inspired treatments, restaurants serving ingredients plucked from the on-site garden and a pool with superb views of Camelback Mountain. A range of excursions and activities means you can really milk the location: a hot air balloon ride over the desert will be one for the photo album.
AC Hotel Little Rock Downtown/Booking.com
Arkansas: AC Hotel, Little Rock
AC Hotels are gloriously sleek, with ultra-minimalist rooms, chic and unfussy communal spaces and a soothing colour palette of elegant neutrals. This new addition is in downtown Little Rock and is in easy reach of attractions like the Historic Arkansas Museum and MacArthur Park. Make a beeline for the sophisticated bar (pictured) and graze on Spanish-style tapas coupled with fine European wines.
California: Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club and Bungalows, San Diego
The Golden State is never short on hotel openings – from glittering five-star retreats to cute beach boltholes in small coastal towns. The Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club dates back to the 1940s and was once a hangout for showbiz heavyweights like Bob Hope and Ava Gardner. Now, it's being completely remodelled by CH Projects, who are well known for their imaginative properties. The new Lafayette, set to open in San Diego in June 2023, will include the swish Continental Bar (pictured) and a pool deck inspired by its mid-century heyday.

Colorado: The Carlin, Breckenridge
One of the USA's premier ski towns, Breckenridge has plenty of top-notch accommodation. This one, poised for a 2023 opening, will have pride of place on the town's Main Street, and the dining options will be the headline act. Guests can look forward to a high-end restaurant with an open kitchen as well as an American tavern. It's a convenient base from which to explore the town, which is packed with 19th-century buildings, and to strike out into the wilds for hiking and cycling adventures.

Connecticut: Hotel Marcel, New Haven
You really can't miss this new Hilton offering in New Haven. It's set in a hulking Brutalist venue – the Pirelli building, designed by legendary modernist architect Marcel Breuer – and professes itself "smartly dressed and eco-obsessed". This focus on sustainability includes a sea of solar panels that power the hotel's own 'microgrid', plus plenty of electric vehicle charging points. It's got style too: the interiors are inspired by mid-century Bauhaus designs and are filled with works by local artists.

Delaware: The Quoin Hotel, Wilmington
Opening its doors in October 2022, the boutique Quoin Hotel has kicked Wilmington's hotel scene up a gear. There are just 24 rooms and suites, which left the designers plenty of time to perfect the rest of the property. The hotel pays homage to Shaker design, with artfully-crafted wood furnishings, patterned wallpaper and objets d'art. Make time for a meal at the Quoin Restaurant, which serves a modern menu inspired by southern France and northern Italy, and for a cocktail at the rooftop bar – the first in the city.
Armit Ocean Resort and Residences
Florida: Amrit Ocean Resort and Residences, Palm Beach
This one's been a long time coming. Tipped for a 2023 opening after several pushbacks, the Amrit Ocean Resort promises to be one of the most luxurious properties on Florida's Atlantic coast. The destination hotel – whose giant towers will be named Peace and Happiness – puts wellness front and centre, with sound and light therapies plus a range of yoga programmes. Ocean views and a fine plant-based restaurant add to its armoury.
Georgia: Passport Springs and Spa, Atlanta
There's still a little while to wait on Atlanta's Passport Springs and Spa, due to open in 2023, but there's an awful lot to wait for. It promises to have the largest spa in North America when it's finally complete, with hot springs, pools and a Roman-inspired courtyard. A sprawling space, it'll be made up of themed 'pavilions' celebrating cultures, cuisines and architecture from everywhere from Japan to Italy.

Hawaii: 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, Kauai
1 Hotel Hanalei Bay – set to open on the north shore of the 'garden island' of Kauai in early 2023 – has made an effort to fit seamlessly into its spectacular surroundings. It's carbon neutral, plus its construction favoured reclaimed rather than virgin materials and its interiors are filled with native plants. You'll also have to choose between six imaginative and produce-led dining and drinks options, from cocktail bar Kai Maika'i at the adults-only infinity pool to Welina Terrace, with its epic views over the waterfront.

Idaho: Humbird Hotel, Sandpoint
Hip Portland-based architecture firm Skylab are the brains behind this chic, Scandi-inspired retreat in Idaho's Schweitzer ski resort, which began accepting reservations in 2022. It's mostly constructed from timber, paying homage to the region's logging history, and main-communal-space the Glass Room comes with a cosy fireplace and vast windows. Alpine-style food is on offer at the on-site restaurant too.
Illinois: The St Regis, Chicago
The St Regis Chicago is hugely impressive before you even get through the doors. It's one of the tallest buildings in the city – a glass giant that towers over many of the surrounding structures (quite a feat in skyscraper-rich Chicago). When it opens in March 2023, it'll offer luxury-loving guests a slew of spacious suites (a butler service is available), a sprawling spa and incredible views of downtown, from the Chicago River to Millennium Park.

Indiana: Tiny Urban Escapes, Indianapolis
What this teensy property lacks in size, it more than makes up for in style. Just four suites are tucked into this minuscule stay made from upcycled shipping containers, and they're filled with greenery, funky artworks and boldly coloured soft furnishings. They each have a living space and a bathroom with a tub too. Best of all, you'll be ideally placed to take in Indiana's up-and-coming capital, with its giant children's museum, racecar heritage and global food scene.
Iowa: Surety Hotel, Des Moines
This new boutique hotel in Des Moines is very stylish indeed. It's got an elegant mid-century aesthetic, with angular furniture and a curated store of artworks and trinkets, and it occupies a striking Beaux-Arts building in downtown. A highlight is the Mulberry Street Tavern: it's got a buzzy bar and a menu of updated American classics and European dishes, from ricotta gnudi to a gourmet burger.

Kansas: The Inn at Meadowbrook, Prairie Village
This homely inn is just a short jaunt from the crowds of Kansas City, but it feels a world away. City slickers can escape into nature in the generous grounds filled with lakes, wriggling pathways and forested areas. Back inside, the interiors are cosy yet stylish, with panelled fireplaces and shelves heaving with art objects plus columns and chandeliers. Dining options range from Verbena, a swish spot serving upscale Midwestern classics and cocktails, to chilled-out café The Market.
Kentucky: Hotel Genevieve, Louisville
Louisville's NuLu ('New Louisville') neighbourhood is the city's hipster heartland, with microbreweries, street art and a food market that champions local chefs. And from spring 2023, Hotel Genevieve will provide an extra reason to visit: the trendy boutique hotel has plush interiors filled with greenery and a swish rooftop bar that's inspired by Parisian design. It's named for Saint Genevieve, a specific type of regional limestone that's used in local bourbon production.

Louisiana: Virgin Hotels, New Orleans
Virgin Hotels are taking the USA by storm and they typically do a stellar job of reflecting their destinations. In New Orleans, that means little design touches like French-style panelled doors, tropical accents and jazzy carpets and flooring. Virgin classics include the Funny Library, a lounge-coffee-shop filled with artwork and cosy chairs, and a rooftop pool. The hotel has a great location in the trendy Warehouse District, close to Caesars Superdome, home to the NFL's New Orleans Saints.

Maine: The Lincoln Hotel, Biddeford
Biddeford has been attracting some attention in recent years, as creative newcomers descend on the city and fill it with trendy restaurants, bars and boutique hotels. Among the latter is this design-led offering, opened in a 19th-century textile mill in autumn 2022. The communal spaces are energetic and playful, with clashing colours and book-laden shelves, while the plush lobby bar is inspired by the nightclubs of the 1940s and 1950s. You can take a refreshing dip in the sleek rooftop pool too.

Maryland: Great Wolf Lodge, Perryville
If you're looking for a family-friendly adventure in Maryland, this might be just the place. Great Wolf Lodge properties are colourful indoor water park resorts and this one – set to be the largest in the portfolio – is planned for an August 2023 opening. Visitors can expect attractive family suites (including kids' sleeping areas themed around caves and log cabins) and a 126,000-square-foot (11,700sqm) water park with slides, forts and a lazy river. Raffles Boston Back Bay Hotel and Residences
Massachusetts: Raffles Back Bay Hotel and Residences, Boston
Though the hotel was supposed to open in 2022, Boston is still waiting for its lavish Raffles property in the Back Bay neighbourhood. The opening is now scheduled for 2023, and the impressive glass-clad venue will boast five sleek bars and restaurants plus a state-of-the-art spa, topped with a garden terrace on the roof. You'll also be ideally situated to explore Back Bay, a charming Boston neighbourhood known for its brownstones, high-end stores and landmark-packed Copley Square.
Michigan: Alexandra Inn, Traverse City
This new and luxurious boutique hotel in Traverse City will put you right on the shores of Lake Michigan. Guests can recline on a private, sandy beach (ideal for families), while the sophisticated rooftop lounge offers sweeping views across the water. If you're after a fly-and-flop break, you needn't leave the property at all – breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served atop the hotel.
Minnesota: West Hotel, Minneapolis
You'll be in a prime location with
this new hotel, opening in Minnesota's biggest city in 2023. It's moments from the riverside and in Minneapolis's buzzing North Loop area, with a wide array of concept restaurants and trendy bars waiting to be explored. That's if you're not tempted to stay burrowed inside your lodgings – there'll be a lounge with a fireplace, a library, a cocktail bar and a restaurant spearheaded by James Beard award-winning chef Tim McKee.
Mississippi: Hotel Tupelo, Tupelo
Tupelo is best known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley and this brand new hotel is a prime base for exploring the city. You'll be in Tupelo's historic Fairpark District, which is a three-minute drive from the birthplace of the King of Rock and Roll. The interiors are fun and lively, with neon signage and plenty of greenery. Make time for dinner at Jobos, the on-site restaurant serving Gulf Coast seafood and cocktails amidst classic Southern hospitality.

Missouri: The Truitt, Kansas City
Dubbing itself a "new-fashioned city hideaway", the Truitt is effortlessly chic with moody, leather-clad common spaces and rooms filled with artwork. The building itself dates back to 1916 and its elegant, columned portico hints at the classy spaces within. If you can bear to leave the comforts of the hotel, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Country Club Plaza shopping centre are moments away.
Montana: Montage, Big Sky
Montage was tipped as the very first ultra-luxe stay in the ski resort of Big Sky near Bozeman, known for its epic powder and varied slopes. The giant property is a destination all by itself, with more than 100 guest rooms and suites, plus a generous spa and a private golf course. Best of all, the resort is overlooked by the dramatic Spanish Peaks mountain range and less than an hour's drive from Yellowstone, with its geysers, springs and world-renowned wildlife.

Nebraska: The Scarlet Hotel, Lincoln
You can't go wrong with a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel, and this one is as thoughtful and stylish as you'd expect. Rest up in cosy common spaces with modern fireplaces and boldly-painted walls, then retire to a polished guest room with artwork reflecting Nebraska's small towns. The Good Life Coffee Shop shines a spotlight on local brands, serving ice cream from the University of Nebraska Lincoln Dairy Store.

Nevada: Fontainebleau, Las Vegas
The Fontainebleau in Miami Beach is already iconic and it's set to get a glamorous sister in the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. The glass juggernaut will throw open its doors at the end of 2023 and will rival the other hotels along the famous Las Vegas strip for drama and luxury. It's set to be the tallest hotel in the city at a towering 738 feet (225m), and will hold an eye-watering 3,700 rooms, each as plush and amenity-filled as the next.
New Hampshire: Villa Hygge Hotel, North Conway
When a property has a name like 'Villa Hygge', you know you've stumbled across an ultra-cosy retreat. Enjoying a spectacular location in the White Mountains, the property serves up a slice of the 'Nordic way of life', with floor-to-ceiling windows and plenty of natural materials resulting in an indoor-outdoor experience. Beyond the design, you can embrace the Scandi lifestyle with a visit to the traditional Finnish sauna or a Nordic tasting experience, where you can sample everything from salmon to smørrebrød.
New Jersey: Nobu Hotel, Atlantic City
New Jersey's answer to Las Vegas, Atlantic City is packed with casino hotels, first-rate restaurants and entertainment venues. The new kid on the block is Nobu Hotel, which will open in Caesars Atlantic City, along the Atlantic City Boardwalk, in 2023. It will include an already-open Nobu restaurant venue, renowned for imaginative Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, while the existing casino floors are set to get an update too.

New Mexico: Hotel Zazz, Albuquerque
Route 66 has a longstanding reputation for quirky roadside accommodation options, and in autumn 2022 Hotel Zazz opened along the Mother Road in Albuquerque. It's a playful property, with works painted by local artists and 50 boldly-designed rooms and suites – think loud wallpaper, stylish leather furniture and patterned rugs. There's a speakeasy on site too.
New York: Aman, New York City
It'll be a long time before any hotel opening in New York City manages to outshine this one. Opened in summer 2022, and touted as the most expensive hotel in New York, Aman is out of the very, very top drawer, with 83 rooms and suites that are soundproofed and decorated in stylish neutrals. There's also a glittering spa and spots for high-end Japanese and Italian cuisine.
North Carolina: The Ficklen, Greenville
There are plenty of reasons to visit underrated Greenville: a robust live music scene, a handful of innovative art galleries and great access to the outdoors. And this fashionable new boutique hotel, opening in the thriving uptown neighbourhood, will add another feather to the city's cap. The property will take up space in an old tobacco warehouse and will feature 70 thoughtfully-designed rooms, a modern restaurant and a lobby bar with craft cocktails.
North Dakota: Jasper Hotel, Fargo
North Dakota's newest hotel promises to "celebrate the heritage and spirit of a pioneer town", and one of the best ways to do that is at the property's Rosewild restaurant. The menus show off seasonal local produce, from steak from nearby ranchers to veg from suburban farms. Inspired by Nordic design, the rooms are sleek and contemporary, and after a good night's sleep you're perfectly placed in downtown Fargo to strike out and explore.
Ohio: Hilton, Columbus
A key hotel in Ohio's capital has had a swish update. Hilton Columbus Downtown opened a second tower in 2022, meaning it's now the largest hotel in the entire state. That's left room for plenty of new artworks by local artists, plus a plethora of tempting dining options. Pictured is the FYR signature restaurant, which dishes up a Latin-influenced American menu championing locally-sourced ingredients cooked over a live grill.
Oklahoma: Noun Hotel, Norman
You'll feel at home as soon as you step into the lobby of this chic boutique hotel – clad with glittering marble, light wood beams and plenty of plants and ceramics. For extra comfort opt for a suite: they come complete with kitchenettes, a balcony and giant windows overlooking Norman, a family-friendly city with a small-town vibe. Set aside an evening for dinner at Supper Club, a modern bistro-style restaurant that offers a mean weekend brunch.

Pennsylvania: Guild House Hotel, Philadelphia
The luxurious Guild House Hotel has claimed a lot of column inches since its opening, and is regularly tipped as one of the finest new properties in Philly. It deserves the accolade, housed as it is in an elegantly restored National Historic Landmark which dates back to the Victorian era. The interiors are artfully curated, with impressive murals, ornate screen doors and vintage trinkets like typewriters scattered about. The lounge (pictured) with its fireplace and velvet sofa is the ultimate place to unwind.
Rhode Island: The Beatrice, Providence
The small city of Providence punches above its weight when it comes to arty attractions, restaurants and hotels – and this boutique property is now among the highlights. From the industrial-chic lobby (with its exposed brick and giant black columns) to the bright and understated rooms, the Beatrice puts design front and centre. The private Bellini Rooftop has become the place to see and be seen in the city, and you can balance out those cocktails by using the in-room 'fit kit'.

South Carolina: Grand Bohemian Lodge, Greenville
This impressive lodge became Greenville's first luxury boutique hotel when it opened in September 2022. It's got a prime location by Liberty Bridge, the impressive single-cable structure that curves across the Reedy River, and it's practically a museum, filled with £1.6 million ($2 million) worth of art. You can also relax with indulgent treatments at the spa, sample drams at the bourbon bar and hang out in the library.

Tennessee: Four Seasons, Nashville
Nashville's hotel scene is fizzing right now and the Four Seasons is one of the most exciting additions. It'll offer a luxurious home away from home in the Tennessee capital's SoBro neighbourhood, with its live music venues and trendy restaurants – though you may struggle to drag yourself away from the sumptuous hotel at all. You can drink in views over Music City from the rooftop pool and luxuriate in indulgent treatments at the spa.

South Dakota: Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort, Custer
Though it opened back in 2018, this imaginative, family-friendly resort adds new lodgings year on year. Among them are rustic cabins, glamping tipis and treehouses, as well as traditional tent and RV sites. Wherever you choose to rest your head, there's plenty to fill your days with – all within easy reach of Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Texas: Artista, San Antonio
The Riverwalk is one of San Antonio's highlights and the Artista – set to open in July 2023 – will be in the heart of the area. As its name suggests, the hotel will be art-filled and design-led, and the proprietors worked with local creatives to reflect San Antonio's myriad cultural influences (from Spain to Latin America). Guests can look forward to elevated restaurant and bar options too.

Utah: Spirit, Zion National Park
Taking advantage of Utah's spectacular red-rock landscapes, this wilderness retreat will offer a back-to-nature experience with no let up on luxury. Differently sized suites will be available, but they'll all have a generous living space, a bathroom with a tub (great for easing those muscles after a hike) and floor-to-ceiling windows with stellar views over Zion National Park. There'll also be a restaurant, lounge, pool and aquaponic greenhouse, and it's set to open in summer 2023.

Vermont: Clay Brook Hotel at Sugarbush, Warren
Renowned for its ski resorts, Vermont does cosy slope-side lodgings very well indeed, and this cute spot at Sugarbush is no exception. Escape from the cold in the snug games room, or brave the year-round outdoor pool (you can warm up afterwards in one of the Jacuzzi tubs). Accommodation options range from regular hotel rooms to five-bedroom suites perfect for a multi-generational family escape.

Virginia: Moxy Downtown, Richmond
Design-lovers can't go wrong with a Moxy hotel and this one in downtown Richmond doesn't disappoint – expect bold murals on the walls and funky furniture throughout. Richmond's branch also describes itself as a 'bar-centric' hotel, with welcome cocktails in the lobby on arrival and a lively party atmosphere. There are retro games and music in the lobby as well.

Washington: RailSpur Hotel, Seattle
Panoramas over Puget Sound and a giant living wall will be the highlights of this new boutique hotel, which will open in Seattle's RailSpur 'micro-district' in 2023 (RailSpur is set over three buildings in Pioneer Square and is filled with restaurants, shops, condos and offices). At this stage details about the hotel are still few and far between, but we've heard there's also set to be a restaurant and a rooftop bar.

West Virginia: The Schoolhouse Hotel, White Sulphur Springs
As its name suggests, this refined boutique hotel has taken over an old schoolhouse, which has roots dating back to 1912. Now it's a glorious contemporary space with tan leather Chesterfields, potted plants and eclectic artwork, and 30 neat guest rooms with a streamlined design. The Rooftop has become a favoured local spot – offering cocktails and vistas of the city and surrounding mountains – while the Varsity Club puts on a menu of Southern classics.
Wisconsin: The Trade Hotel, Milwaukee
Milwaukee will welcome this smart boutique-style hotel (part of the Marriott Autograph Collection) in early 2023, and it's already being tipped as the 'official hotel of Deer District', a top sports and entertainment hub in the city. Don't miss a sundowner at the rooftop restaurant, which will reward diners with sweeping views across the cityscape. Rooms are elegant, with neutral tones and wood panelling.

Wyoming: The Virginian Lodge, Jackson
Feel nostalgic at this old-school lodge in Jackson that promises to "keep it Western". Enveloped by mountains and providing the perfect springboard for adventures in the wilds of Wyoming, the lodge is a converted 1960s motel and pays homage to the Wild West with a saloon and rustic interiors. On the borders of the property you'll find the Virginian Restaurant, which is locally run and dishes up hearty breakfasts and classic American entrées.
