Czechia, or the Czech Republic, is a landlocked country of low hills and plateaus, hemmed in by gently-sloping mountains. But despite this mellow terrain, it’s still the 14th most dangerous European country for drivers, according to the data.
In 2023, there were 502 road deaths in Czechia, equivalent to 46.4 deaths per million (2% more than the EU27 average). The majority of these accidents occurred on rural roads, which are often poorly maintained and where the speed limit is 56 miles per hour (90km/h).
