It’s the most wonderful time of the year for wandering around a Christmas market, gulping hot drinks, nibbling spiced nuts, and gazing at twinkly light displays. Happily, you don't need to travel to Europe to enjoy them. There are some dazzling holiday events happening all around the US this winter. From small community gatherings rooted in European traditions to sprawling, sparkly seasonal fairs, there is a holiday market happening in every state that’s sure to get even the most Christmas averse into the festive spirit.

Alabama: Cullman Christkindlmarkt, Cullman
German tradition meets Southern charm at the Cullman Christkindlmarkt, a one-stop shop for all your holiday fun. The annual festive affair in downtown Cullnan begins with the official lighting of its Christmas Pyramid while the Cullman Community Band plays holiday tunes. As well as stalls selling authentic German crafts, there will be ice skating, carousel rides, parades, and oodles of activities for the kids. The market's German-inspired food and drink (flammekueche, schnitzel, and glühwein) is bound to be a highlight. The Cullman Christkindlmarkt is on from November 21 through December 23.

Alaska: Holiday Market, Anchorage
Anchorage is aglow with holiday magic in December and highlights include its annual tree-lighting ceremony in Town Square Park on November 30 and the lively Downtown Holiday Market, which is hosted by local brewery 49th State Brewing on weekends in December. As well as sampling some fine state-made brews, you can buy unique gifts from Alaskan-owned businesses before meeting Santa Claus himself to hand over your own wish list. With plenty of snow and a high chance of glimpsing the Northern Lights, Alaska's largest city positively sparkles in December.

Arizona: Christkindl Market, Prescott
Officially christened Arizona’s Christmas City, historic Prescott immerses locals and visitors in all kinds of holiday fun from late November onward. The festivities commence with its 27th annual holiday light parade and bonfire festival on November 30. This is then followed by its 42nd annual Christmas parade on December 7. The city’s long-running annual courthouse lighting tradition follows the parade, before a holiday market sets up on Goodwin Street on December 14-15. It's here where stalls and food vendors convene to create a heart-warming and traditional European-style market.

Arkansas: Arkansas Craft Guild Christmas Showcase, Little Rock
Whether you’re in the mood for a holiday shop or just want to soak up the spirit of the season, Little Rock is the place to be in December. As well as some impressive holiday decorations all around the state capital, and the Big Little Rock holiday parade on December 7, there is also some great gift-buying to be had. Select thoughtful stocking fillers and splash out on presents to impress, from woodcarvings, candles and pottery to handmade jewelry, sculptures, and photography at the Arkansas Craft Guild Christmas Showcase. The craft showcase is held on December 1-3 at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds.

California: Julefest, Solvang
Steeped in Danish heritage, pretty Solvang hosts a month of Yuletide festivities during its famous Solvang Julefest. These exuberant, annual celebrations include a European-style, open-air Makers Market held in Solvang Park. Stalls here are jam-packed with great gifts and artisanal wares. It takes place on December 4, 11, and 18 this year from 3-7pm. As well as glowing lights and gorgeous decorations everywhere, there is a tree-lighting ceremony (December 6), holiday parade (December 7), candlelit tours, nativity reenactments, and various carol performances. Julefest culminates with the Christmas Tree Burn, a bonfire held outside Old Mission Santa Inés on January 10.

Colorado: Denver Christkindlmarket, Denver
One of the country’s biggest and brightest seasonal events, the Denver Christkindlmarket takes place at the Civic Center Park from November 22 to December 23 this year. It’s easy to imagine yourself in Germany at this annual tradition where the Bavarian treats flow and cheery live acts entertain. Complete with little wooden huts bedecked with sparkling lights, the artisan market will answer all your Christmas gifting needs with its 40-plus stalls while the Festival Hall will replenish you with traditional German food and drinks. Connecticut: Glow, Hartford
A warm wintry hue hangs over Hartford at this time of year when its annual light festival Glow illuminates the Connecticut Convention Center. This year, from November 29 until December 29, the interactive light gardens, mesmerizing, illuminated structures, and LED swings will be accompanied by a festive holiday market with vendors selling an array of gifts, both edible and ornamental. Sip warming drinks and savor seasonal treats while you listen to festive tunes at this multi-sensory seasonal shindig.
Delaware: Schellville Winter Celebration, Rehoboth Beach
From November 16, free festive fun for all the family draws the crowds to the Schellville Winter Celebration in Rehoboth Beach. The open-air Christmas village takes over Tanger Seaside, with its festive lights, local vendors, and family-friendly activities. In between browsing the stalls, take the little ones on train rides and enter the snow zones to experience the flurries that happen for 15 minutes every hour. Keep an eye out for Mr and Mrs Claus and work up an appetite for all those seasonal sweet treats with a roller-skating session. The village is open on various dates until December 31.

Florida: Waterfront Winter Wonderland, Key West
It might be warm and distinctly tropical, but Key West can still pull off winter wonderland vibes. The Key West Waterfront Winter Wonderland takes place December 13-28, in the Coffee Butler Amphitheater at Truman Waterfront Park, with stalls selling local artisanal wares and food. There’s also rides, ice skating, stunning light displays, live music, readings, festive crafts, and snow flurries – all of which can be enjoyed while you stroll around in your summer gear.

Georgia: Helen’s Christmas Market, Helen
There’s always something Christmassy about Helen, but Georgia’s very own Bavarian-style town really comes into its own when holiday season arrives. The annual Lighting of the Village event on November 29, when all the town's twinkling lights are switched on, launches the festivities and is swiftly followed by the Christmas Market on November 30. The German-inspired, open-air event is also open on December 1, 7, and 8, with stalls selling candied treats along with handmade gifts and decorations. This year, the quaint market will be set up and held in the downtown Market Platz and Unicoi Hill Park.
Hawaii: Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace, Honolulu
A jar of Hawaiian raw honey, sea salt flavored chocolate, spicy pepper jelly, hand carved wooden jewelry, and colorful textiles will make lovely and original gifts. Seek out independent producers selling island-made produce, gifts, and crafts at Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace, a highly anticipated holiday gift and craft fair held in Honolulu on December 14-15. Around 250 vendors will set up stalls to sell their wares alongside holiday craft activities for the little ones and entertainment.
Idaho: Sun Valley Winter Wonderland Festival, Sun Valley
During the annual Winter Wonderland Festival in December, Sun Valley is as pretty as a Christmas card. Think glittering Christmas trees, torchlight mountain parades, caroling, crackling fireworks, cookie decorating, and European-style holiday market stalls where the scent of hot spiced wine and roasted nuts fills the chilly air. Sun Valley Winter Wonderland Festival’s holiday market sets up on December 14-15 and is an ideal place for buying locally-made artisan gifts and gorgeous wreaths to deck your halls.

Illinois: Christkindlmarket, Chicago
A firm holiday tradition in the Windy City, Christkindlmarket Chicago takes place for the 28th festive season running this year and promises to be a real winter warmer. Between November 22 and December 24, Daley Plaza will transform into a traditional German market with over 50 stalls to explore. Intersperse stocking-filler shopping with gulps of glühwein, nibbles of pretzels and bratwurst, and ice skating at this feel-good event which was inspired by the 16th-century Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg. A satellite market also takes place in downtown Aurora at RiverEdge Park.
Indiana: Athenaeum Christkindlmarkt, Indianapolis
Weekends from November 29 until December 22 bring great tidings to anyone out shopping in Indianapolis. The annual Athenaeum Christkindlmarkt sets up in Mass Avenue’s Arts District, at Rathskeller Biergarten, and is a veritable box of festive delights. The winter market has a host of huts selling local handicrafts and seasonal treats that will make excellent gifts. In addition to this, there's also a medley of food stalls dishing out hearty German dishes – all to the tune of live music. Look out for nods to other global holiday celebrations such as Krampusnacht, Sankt Nikolaus Fest, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, and Kwanzaa.

Iowa: Winter Solstice Market, Winterset
There is plenty to feast your eyes and bellies on at Winterset’s two-day holiday shopping experience, Winter Solstice Market, December 13-14. Set inside the Winterset Livery building, the stalls are filled with one-off arts and crafts along with delicious locally made delicacies. It might be approaching the shortest day of the year but there’s a lot to light up the season in the city. The Festival of the Lights launches the festive fun on November 29.

Kansas: Old World Christkindlmarkt, St Marys
A little bit French and very German, St Mary’s Old World Christkindlmarkt (which translates as 'Christ child market') draws its inspiration from centuries-old Teutonic traditions to create a scene of utter festive magic. Taking place at the Flint Hills Shakespeare Festival grounds between November 29-30 and December 6-7, go to bask in the Yuletide atmosphere, drink glühwein, nibble gingerbread, and buy gifts that are bound to charm even the fussiest member of your family.
Kentucky: Michler’s Christmas Market, Lexington
A joyful gathering of local artists and artisans, Michler’s Christmas Market takes place in Lexington’s much-loved family-owned garden center. Tents will be set up in the gardens and greenhouses on December 7-8. The scent of evergreen trees and seasonal blooms will be accompanied by the smell of spiced wine and Christmas pastries. Watch Michler’s expert wreath makers at work, pick up a showstopper for your door, and admire the florist-decorated boxwood trees. Don’t miss a bite to eat at its fabulous Kentucky Native Café either, a place where the menu is stuffed with seasonal produce.
Louisiana: Mistletoe & Moss Holiday Market, Lake Charles
Ready and raring for the holiday season? Lake Charles certainly is from mid-November on. Along with lights and horsedrawn carriage rides, it hosts the Mistletoe & Moss Holiday Market at the Lake Charles Event Center on November 15-17. You can buy decorations, ornaments, and thoughtful presents at the stalls (gift yourself a few new items while you're at it). High quality food vendors will be there to ensure shoppers are well fed and watered while they meander around the market. Got little ones in tow? Be sure to book tickets for Santa’s Workshop.
Maine: Christmas Prelude, Kennebunkport
People travel from far and wide to get into the Christmas spirit at Kennebunkport's annual and long-running Christmas Prelude. Part of the 11-day celebrations is its Merry Makers Market, which does just that, making gift buying a merry occasion with its eclectic collection of Maine-made fine art, crafts, and jewelry. With free arts and crafts activities for the kids and a fire pit to gather round, there is fun for all here. Other seasonal highlights in the pretty harbor town are the annual tree-lightings, Santa arriving by lobster boat, and carol singing at the Franciscan Monastery. This year marks 43 years of the Prelude which takes place December 5-15.
Maryland: Christmas Village, Baltimore
Lights, camera, action: from November 23 until December 24, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor dazzles with festive light displays and heaves with holiday fun as the photogenic Christmas Village comes back to town. Think live entertainment, all manner of melted cheese and smoked meat delights to chow down on, and over 60 local and international vendors selling adorable gifts and seasonal goodies. At the heart of it all is the 30-foot (9m) tall Pyramid. This custom-made carousel-like tower, from the Ore Mountains in Germany, blazes with 3,000 lights and serves an impressive variety of glühwein (mulled wine) imported from Nuremberg.
Massachusetts: Winter in Seaport, Boston
Boston positively glows in the holiday season with its annual Snowport, also known as Winter in Seaport, a seasonal highlight on what is an action-packed calendar. Snowport’s Holiday Market is on from November 8 until December 29 this year. In between browsing stalls for gift inspiration, you can keep the kids onboard with holiday craft activities and delicious things to eat and drink. Don’t miss live music performances by local musicians at the Jingle Bar, which is bedecked with hundreds of bells. It’s just one of a few themed bars. There is also outdoor iceless curling, a tree market, and the annual holiday tree-lighting, Light Up Seaport, which takes place on December 6.
Michigan: Kerstmarkt, Holland
People travel from far and wide to enjoy Holland’s famous Dutch-style festive market, Kerstmarkt, which takes over 8th Street Marketplace from November 23 until December 21 this year. The scent of speculaas and hot chocolate will fill the air, while an array of vendors gather to sell all kinds of handcrafted gifts and decorations. Visit on a Saturday and you can pick up tasty treats for your Thanksgiving and Christmas tables too as the Farmers’ Market also takes place in the city. Other seasonal activities will include dog sled demos, handbell concerts, appearances from Sinterklaas, and heart-warming performances by the Dickens Carolers.

Minnesota: Duluth Winter Village, Duluth
Warm your cockles by firepits, sip spiced Yuletide drinks, and tuck into sugar-dusted waffles at Duluth’s annual Winter Village. This jolly annual holiday market, which is on December 7-8 at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, gathers together an enticing collection of local businesses selling a varied selection of clothes, jewelry, and handicrafts. Mississippi: Victorian Candlelit Christmas, Hattiesburg
Hattiesburg historic neighborhood and downtown is the perfect setting for the city’s charming annual Victorian Candlelit Christmas event, which has been organized by its Historic Neighborhood Association for over 40 years. The streets are dotted with 18,000 white bags with flickering candles illuminating its sidewalks, while stores and buildings are festooned with lights, bows, and garlands. Hop on a horse-drawn carriage from the Walthall, listen to traditional carols on the church steps, enjoy delicious food from street food stalls, and pick up gorgeous gifts in the twinkly stores.
Missouri: Christmastime in Hermann, Hermann
Christmas traditions run deep in Hermann due to the pretty town’s German roots. No sooner are its annual Oktoberfest celebrations over than it shifts into Yuletide mode with an action-packed calendar of events. The Sounds of Starkenburg concerts and Christmas Market, followed by a lantern parade, launch the festivities on November 30. The Stone Hill Winery hosts a Kristkindl Markt on December 7-8 with stalls, carols, and mulled wine – this is the place to get your wine for the big day. Elsewhere, Hermann’s own Kristkindl Markt takes place at the Inn at Hermannhof on December 14-15. It's another great opportunity to buy gifts and fuel up on festive fare.
Montana: Little Red Truck European Christmas Market, Missoula
An abundance of seasonal fun swirls around Missoula in the holiday period. You'll find it in the snowy streets, lit up with holiday cheer, and the Missoula Fairgrounds when Little Red Truck's 10th annual Christmas Market gets everyone into festive mode December 6-9. Think hot spiced nuts and drinks, stalls overflowing with thoughtful gifts sold by local businesses, and live music that is guaranteed to get your toes tapping. Families should plan to visit on the Friday when it’s rumored Santa will be in attendance.

Nebraska: Holiday Market, Omaha
A much-anticipated event on the Omaha calendar, the 2024 Holiday Market will be held on December 7-8 in Aksarben Village. The jovial event brings in an array of local vendors and promises a jolly ambience for holiday provisions shopping. New Jersey hosts another of the country’s best German-style holiday markets in early December. The German Christmas Market of New Jersey takes place at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on December 6-8 this year. It was started by local German-American volunteers in 2001. They had a vision of replicating the authentic winter markets of their homeland – and did precisely that. Expect a jolly atmosphere, generous amounts of rib-sticking food, warming drinks, traditional music, and a variety of local and international vendors selling high-quality, handmade goods. This is one festive shopping event you won't want to miss.
New Mexico: Holiday Market at the Rail Yards, Albuquerque
Like all the best Christmas events, community is at the heart of Albuquerque’s cherished Holiday Market at the Rail Yards. This December, it celebrates its 10 year anniversary. It’s all about buying local year-round at Rail Yards Market, a non-profit Sunday market with a mission to promote the diverse cuisine, culture, and art of Albuquerque and New Mexico. Head along to its Holiday Market on December 14-15 to eat, drink, and be merry at its enticing food stalls. Listen to live music, purchase some lovely gifts, and stop by the Donation Station to give back to those in need in the true spirit of Christmas.

New York: Jingle Falls Weekend, Niagara Falls
A sackful of seasonal events sprinkles even more magic over Niagara Falls between November 29 and December 1 when the annual Jingle Falls weekend takes place. Join the Jingle Falls stroll, led by a state park guide, and holiday craft sessions at Niagara Falls State Park. North Carolina: Scandinavian Christmas Fair, Raleigh
Those Scandis sure know how to embrace the wonder of winter and so do the people of Raleigh who mark the holidays with a Julmarknad (Swedish for Christmas fair). Inspired by the traditions of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, the annual Scandinavian Christmas Fair takes place on December 7 this year at the North Carolina Kerr Scott Building in the State Fairgrounds. Expect plenty of nice Nordic things including food (meatballs and pastries among them), music, folk dancing, and authentic decorations and handicrafts. The angelic Lucia Procession, a festival of lights celebrated in parts of Scandinavian, is a highlight.

North Dakota: Dickens Village Festival, Garrison
Charles Dickens is, for many, indelibly associated with Christmas and Garrison embraces the famous writer’s festive vision with gusto at its joyful annual Dickens Village Festival. Step into Victorian London at the event (November 29-30, December 6-7, and December 13-14) which includes live musical performances of A Christmas Carol, top hat decorating and Dickens readings. Warm up with soups sold by street vendors as strolling street urchins and carolers pass by. Other highlights here are the Piccadilly Square Craft Vendor Show and Victorian Christmas Tea Tasting. Cincy’s traditional Christkindlmarkt will warm your cockles between November 22 and January 5 with an abundance of holiday spirit. It’s beginning to look a lot like Nuremberg in Philly’s LOVE Park during the holiday season, when the Germany-inspired Philadelphia Christmas Village fills the downtown space with its little wooden stalls and beer garden from November 23 to December 24. Take a spin on the carousel or Ferris wheel, board the little ones on the children's train, and visit the Festival of Trees to vote for your favorite. You can also meet Santa and help raise money for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Afterwards, make a beeline for the beer garden for bratwurst, raclette sandwiches, Belgian fries, spätzle, and strudel.

Rhode Island: Providence Artisans Holiday Show, Providence
You can really make light work of your Christmas shopping at this charming holiday market. Brimming with festive cheer, it brings together some of Rhode Island’s most talented artisans. It has grown from a small holiday market in a church bazaar to a four-day extravaganza at NRG Park that draws in over 92,000 visitors. In between shopping, watch fashion shows and simply revel in the holiday atmosphere at this Nutcracker-themed market that is a firm Houston holiday tradition.
Utah: Christmas Village, Ogden
Encircled by snow-dusted mountains in winter, charming Ogden is the perfect setting for a Christmas village. This year, the town’s Christmas Village, with its festive stalls, fairy lights, and Christmas trees, will light up downtown Ogden from November 30 and stay open right through to January 1 2025. The Santa Run on Washington Blvd marks the official opening day, with hundreds of runners dressed as the jolly big man pounding through the streets to raise money. The Holiday Electric Light Parade takes place later that same day, working its way from 22nd Street to end at 27th Street on Washington Blvd. It will be followed by fireworks and will be a vibrant start to what promises to be a joyful winter season in Utah’s Weber County.
Vermont: Hotel Vermont Holiday Market, Burlington
Burlington’s Hotel Vermont brims with Christmas crafts and special gifts on December 14 at its annual holiday market. With the emphasis on shopping small, this seasonal fair handpicks local makers and artists. It features 60-plus stalls spilling across the hotel’s lobby levels here and at the Courtyard Marriott. A DJ will spin the tunes while you seek out items for your friends and family (perhaps picking up the odd treat or two for yourself as well). Chat with the makers while you browse and enjoy special festive cocktails at the Juniper and Bleu bars, along with some complimentary nibbles.

Virginia: Herndon WinterMarkt, Herndon
Herndon’s characterful and historic downtown plays host to the European-style WinterMarkt on December 14, drawing the community together to mark the holiday season. Pretty lights, decorated trees, German bands, and traditional dance acts ensure an exuberant atmosphere while you have a good rifle through the stalls selling hand-crafted Christmas decorations, woodwork items, artworks, textiles, and all sorts of tempting European delicacies like lebkuchen and stollen. Washington State: Leavenworth Christmastown, Leavenworth
Sitting prettily in the snowbound Cascade Mountains, the Bavarian-style village of Leavenworth really plays to its strengths during the holiday season when it becomes a veritable winter wonderland. One huge holiday market, Leavenworth's Christmastown event (November 29 to December 24) brings a host of special events, pop-up stores, and the enchanting Village of Lights. This annual event sees over half a million twinkling lights illuminate Leavenworth at the darkest time of year, before they’re taken down at the end of February. There should be a good sprinkling of snow around in December too, which adds to the village’s snow globe vibes.

West Virginia: Olde Tyme Christmas, Harpers Ferry and Bolivar
The historic and picturesque mountain town of Harpers Ferry and its sister town Bolivar sparkle in December as they co-host the annual Olde Tyme Christmas. Taking place this year on December 6-8 and December 14-15, the towns will be festooned with twinkling lights, holiday trees, and street decorations, while original gifts made by local vendors go on sale at the Handmade Holiday Market. There will be wagon rides and history tours of Harpers Ferry’s atmospheric 19th-century streets, extended shopping hours, children’s activities, and Santa appearances, along with caroling, bands, and parades.
Wisconsin: Old World Christmas Market at The Osthoff Resort, Elkhart Lake
Get your Christmas shopping wrapped up, in between seasonal scoffing, at the 26th annual Old World Christmas Market, held at The Osthoff Resort from December 6-15. Steeped in European traditions, the market brings together a bevy of local and international traders selling some incredible things. Pick out Czech blown-glass ornaments for your tree, treat your littlest relatives to Russian nesting dolls and hand-painted Santas, and go crackers for its collection of hand-carved German nutcrackers. Follow the scent of hot glühwein to the food court, where you can feast on schnitzel, potato pancakes, red cabbage, pulled pork, and apple strudel. Just what you need on a wintry Wisconsin day.

Wyoming: Hallmarket at David Street Station, Casper
The Cowboy State knows how to put on a dazzling display at Christmas time. Casper’s David Street Station is a hub of holiday activity, with its annual ice rink and seasonal movie screenings. This year, its new Hallmarket event on November 30 looks set to be another cracker. You’ll be sure to find special gifts for all the gang among the market’s stalls run by local vendors. Set around the towering community Christmas tree, which will have its own tree-lighting ceremony, the market will feature a Christmas tree farm where you can choose your own. There will also be horse-drawn carriage rides, food and drink, and games.
