Have breakfast with giraffes in Kenya
The children will think they’ve stepped into a storybook at Giraffe Manor, a grand 1930s mansion near Nairobi. Except it’s not a tiger who’s coming to tea but giraffes coming for breakfast. The herd of resident Rothschild giraffes visit most mornings and evenings, peering into the windows in the hope of a tasty treat before retreating to their forest sanctuary. It’s not just the children who will be entranced by these graceful giants.

Sleep in a fairy-tale treehouse in the British woodlands
You might already have tried glamping, but quirky campsite Blackberry Wood in East Sussex has ramped it up a level with its zany collection of accommodation. This delightful structure named Piggledy (Higgledy is next door) sleeps four with a kitchen, toilet, shower and wood-burning stove. The outside terrace has a chimenea where you can keep cosy while enjoying al fresco evenings. Should that not appeal to your kids, there's a gypsy wagon, double decker bus, helicopter or traditional tents to stay in too.
