Lying half submerged just off Half Moon Bay are the rusting remains of a warship built for the colony of Victoria in 1870. Once the pride and joy of the Royal Australian Navy, HMVS Cerberus was the first breastwork monitor warship in the world and on active duty for over half a century. By the First World War, her status as a warship was revoked and she became a guardship and munitions store. Retired in 1924, she was towed across Port Phillip Bay to be sunk off Black Rock as a bulwark.
