The US has some of the longest and busiest roads in the world, and road fatalities are among the country's leading causes of death. According to recent estimates by the National Safety Council (NSC), more than 44,000 people died in traffic crashes in 2023. Data from a four-year study by vehicle software company Teletrac Navman suggests that it’s the country’s highways that tend to be the deadliest roads, due to the density of traffic and the fact that they're high-speed and prone to driving hazards like extreme weather.
