Football’s popularity in England was growing in the 1920s. London’s Wembley Stadium hosted its first FA Cup Final in 1923. Bolton Wanderers beat West Ham United 1-0 in a game that became known as the ‘White Horse Final’ because of the police animal that helped clear the crowd from the pitch before kick-off. Thousands of people without tickets entered the ground, resulting in overcrowding. The twin towers came to be regarded as an iconic feature of Wembley Stadium.
