Celebrities know how to holiday in style. With a cash flow that we mere mortals can only dream of, they’re able to splash out on the best hotel suites around the world. Whether they’re honeymooning on a private island paradise or checking into a city centre bolthole with oodles of space, they know which rooms to book for a star-worthy stay. From Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s London penthouse to a Cannes Film Festival favourite, here are the hotel suites that the A-listers just love to stay in.

Lionel Messi, Justin Bieber and Hilary Swank have something in common – they have all been guests at Jumby Bay Island in Antigua & Barbuda. The all-inclusive private island – which has also played host to Mariah Carey, Will Smith and Paul McCartney – is accessible only by boat, adding to the feeling of exclusivity. Surrounded by tropical greenery and almost five miles (8km) of shoreline, the resort comprises 28 suites. The best is the Estate Suite, which has a wrap-around patio and master bedroom leading to a garden with an outdoor bath and rain shower.

Ever wondered what Beyoncé and Jay-Z look for in a hotel? It could be incredible city views from multiple rooftop terraces, a private butler service, marble bathrooms or giant chandeliers. All of this comes as standard in the Royal Penthouse Suite at London’s Corinthia hotel, where the superstar couple stayed. And they are in good company – other celebs to have splashed out on a stay here include Lady Gaga. The suite is a cut above, with its own lift, private spa access and walk-in wine cellar.

Dame Judi Dench stayed at Gaya Island Resort, just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, to film her Wild Borneo Adventure documentary. The island is home to sheltered coral reefs, mangroves and the sandy expanse of Malohom Bay. Snorkelling expeditions are led by the hotel’s resident marine biologist. Dotted amongst the hillside, the villas have views of ancient rainforests and Mount Kinabalu – the highest mountain in Borneo and Malaysia. The spa is set amidst the treetops and offers treatments such as Malay massages and honey and avocado seed facials.

Keira Knightley checked into one of the Baruna and Samudra villas during her stay at Spa Village Resort in Tembok, on Bali’s northeast coast. With their own private entry, plus a plunge pool with panoramic sea views, these one-bedroom suites have a traditional Balinese feel, with beds crafted by local artists and woven ceilings throughout. The resort is ideal for a wellness break thanks to a menu of daily spa treatments, such as candlelit massages under the stars and ​​invigorating foot scrubs using dried jackfruit leaves.

For A-listers wanting to enjoy some downtime, Vegas is just the ticket. And Caesars Palace – known for its collection of 25 opulent villas – is one of the most highly reputed celeb hangouts in Sin City. The Nobu Hotel, a boutique hotel within Caesars Palace, is home to the exquisite three-bedroom, Nobu Hotel Villa, with past guests including Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. The Japanese theme extends to the roof terrace with its zen garden and onsen tub.

An exclusive beach setting, uber-plush accommodation and the Caribbean's top golf course make Casa de Campo a hit with the stars. Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez have both stayed in oceanfront villas at this gated resort on the Dominican Republic’s southern coast, along with Sandra Bullock and the cast of The Lost City, which was filmed on the island. The exclusive villas – which can sleep between 12 and 30 guests – have all the luxuries, like marble baths, home theatre systems, bottles of Champagne on arrival and a personal butler to do everything from cooking to unpacking. 

During the Cannes Film Festival, celebrities flock to the French Riviera, and one hotel, in particular, stands out from the crowd – the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. With a choice of sumptuous rooms, suites and villas, plus a stellar location on the Côte d'Azur, it’s easy to see why it serves as the base for many celebrities. Will Smith, Steven Spielberg, Katy Perry and Jude Law are among the long list of stars who have checked in here, lured perhaps by the saltwater rock pool, La Prairie spa treatments or red clay tennis courts.

Paris Hilton chose Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi as one of the stops on her epic seven week-long honeymoon – and it's easy to see why. Surrounded by white sand beaches and shimmering blue ocean, it’s a couple’s paradise. The star stayed in an overwater villa, complete with its own swimming pool and private terrace with daybeds and hammocks strung over the sea. Inside, there’s a dressing room with a glass floor – so you can literally walk on water. Other famous guests include Serena Williams and Emily Ratajkowski.

Located in the heart of the Sunset Strip, with hidden villas and private suites, the Sunset Marquis Hotel is loved by celebrities looking for a Hollywood hideaway. George Clooney, Billy Bob Thornton, Pedro Almodóvar, Danny Boyle and Michael Fassbender have all stayed here, plumping for the Presidential Villa, with its private screening room, grand piano and a bathroom complete with a TV and fire. The hotel is just a short ride from where the Golden Globes are held and also features an on-site recording studio.

Set on the shores of Puerto Rico’s north coast, the 5-star Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotel, has been the chosen getaway spot for stars including Megan Fox, who got engaged to Machine Gun Kelly outside the resort’s world-class spa. The couple stayed in the exclusive Su Casa villa, a huge, Spanish-style pad situated on the eastern end of the Dorado beach property. The five-bedroom villa has luxurious touches like open-air baths, a private infinity pool with ocean views and live-in staff.

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi impressed ex-footballer Rio Ferdinand so much that he proposed to his girlfriend Kate Wright here. The former Manchester United defender popped the question on the hotel’s helipad, though he would have been spoilt for choice with lavish locations – glittering chandeliers hang from ceilings, furniture is gilded throughout and the beaches are pristine. The star and his family stayed in the three-bedroom penthouse suite, named the Abu Dhabi Suite, with 360-degree views of the city, plus a private lift, cinema and state-of-the-art spa.

Locations don’t get much glitzier than Venice, with its marble palaces, romantic waterways and fashionable locals. Dominating the Venetian lagoon, the Hotel Danieli, a Luxury Collection, Venice is a firm favourite of the Kardashians, with Kourtney staying at the hotel following Milan Fashion Week. The star treated herself to the most regal accommodation, the Doge Dandolo Royal Suite, which features multiple balconies with 180-degree views of the city. Inside are soaring ceilings, 18th century chandeliers and gilded mirrors.

If you’re after the most luxurious suite in Poland, you’ve found it in the Paderewski Suite, set inside the Hotel Bristol, a Luxury Collection, Warsaw. Named after the politician and pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the room is a nationally protected monument and features original 20th century furnishings and a grand piano. Perhaps the musical element was the draw for Ed Sheeran when he stayed in this elegant suite – there’s also a vintage gramophone. The option of connecting up to six rooms is ideal for A-listers and their entourage.

Plenty of rock ‘n’ roll royalty has stayed at The Edgewater in downtown Seattle, including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters. And there’s style in spades, from the freestanding bath overlooking the garden to the sleek, four-poster bed with a full set of voile curtains. Dining options at the resort include a castaway-style picnic with gourmet food and an open-flame barbecue cooked by a private chef.

Since opening in the 1920s, Le Bristol Paris has been a favourite among celebs, with a glittering guest list ranging from Charlie Chaplin to George Clooney, David Beckham, Lupita Nyong'o and Jared Leto. The elegantly-styled Paris Suite oozes romance and opulence, with silk drapes and a similar parquet flooring found in the Palace of Versailles.
