Virtual art exhibitions are now a thing in the UK

Forget stuffy museums and hushed galleries, you can now enjoy art among some of the UK’s finest countryside

From the Humber Bridge at Hull to Filey Brigg, along the Yorkshire Wolds Way, visitors are can now discover a special kind of art gallery.

A “Secret Art Trail” has opened along the Yorkshire Wolds Way, showcasing everything from poetry to paintings – all in a virtual world.

Inspired by the desire to create an environmentally friendly art gallery, the exhibition uses smartphone technology to allow visitors access to “hidden” art along the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Download the Traces app (iOS/Android) and you can follow a map or signposts along the route and then pop the floating bubbles to discover visual and audio art, including a poem by Yorkshire-wordsmith Ian McMillan.

Other works have been provided by local artists, and visitors have the option to add their own art, audio or visual, through the app. Plus, there are downloadable discount vouchers and prizes that can be redeemed with local artists and galleries throughout the route.

The Yorkshire Wolds stretch from East Riding of Yorkshire into Ryedale and encompass a series of low hills, perfect for a countryside stroll or weekend escape.
